Pastelito Delivery Service

The temperature has been in the double digits around here. So cooking has been a pretty low priority. If I do cook, it will usually involve the crockpot and rice cooker and me NOT in the kitchen for hours.

But last week, I baked! Yes, BAKED. And I'm not just talking about the day I spent too much time in the sun. (That's a story for another day...) ;-)

I made a big batch of my fabulous Pastelitos de Guayaba (homemade guava pastries).

What on earth could have possessed me to go into the kitchen, let alone turn on the oven, you ask?

Desi, of course. (*be still my foolish heart*) My friend, Desi Arnaz, Jr.

You see, I had promised to make him some pastelitos and the last few times we've been to Vegas (he lives close to there) we were unable to connect. But this time, his lovely wife, my sweet friend Amy encouraged us to come. They'd just be getting back from a trip, and he'd probably be tired and un-shaven, but would love to see me.

Could I possibly be deterred by a such a small detail as a vacation beard? Besides, all I heard was "... Desi would love to see you."

So I baked.

And, along with my Amy, drove through the Nevada desert in 110 degree heat to deliver the pastelitos to my friend (and teen crush, but that's not important right now. *she blushes*) Desi Arnaz, Jr.

P8280884

He tasted them right away. (Notice the sign that says "JOY" directly behind him. Coincidence? I think not.)

P8280887

He declared them to be delicious.

Desi: "Would you like some?"

Me: "Can you stop me?"

P8280888

I have to reiterate what a delightful and fun-loving (not to mention, immensely talented) guy he is.

And of course, I'm grateful to dear Amy who took time out of her busy schedule to take us on a tour of the charming town of Boulder City, where the Arnaz's own and operate the Historic Boulder Theatre. Amy blogs over at Insights from The Magic Tutu. (If you stop by and say hello, be sure to tell her Marta sent you. =D)

P8280903

The Two Amys. How adorable are they??

So, the Pastelito Delivery was a success. We're grateful once again to the Arnaz's for their gracious hospitality.

And once again, I forgot for a moment that he was the son of TV and Cuban Royalty. Until he asked if we liked his T-shirt. The one with the picture of "Mom."

I know. Shut. UP.  ;-)

El Niño

Okay, so I did a little more than visit Desi Arnaz Jr. *sigh* when we went to Las Vegas this past weekend.

Eric had to be in meetings for most of the time (except when his client wined him and dined him and took him to The Mirage to see Danny Gans, but that's not important right now).

Which is why I took Adam. So that he could keep me company. Adam is 22, which, if you know your Charada China, is SAPO (TOAD....eeeww!).  Now, being a SAPO could go either way - you're either super lucky or a jinx.

And with Adam, who is the most rambunctious and unpredictable of my four kids (and probably the most like me, which is why he's so crazy-making), I figured we'd either 1)have a fabulous time, or 2) I would end up wanting to bludgeon him with a blunt object.  It could go either way.  ;-)

I was worried, too, that he'd get carried away gambling - this being the first time he could legitimately play - and he would be sad about losing all his money.  You know how it is.  Or possibly you don't, but well...

You have these great big notions about Las Vegas! and really high expectations and well, I didn't want him to be disappointed.

So here's how Adam's first Vegas trip went down:

We laughed and told jokes on the four hour road trip. (Eric drove.)
Adam & me
We stayed at the fabulously ritzy Trump International Hotel. (thanks, Eric's client!)
Everything was gold and the beds were super comfy and there was a really deep bathtub where you could soak AND watch tv, and okay... maybe that was kind of an overshare....
Adam & me 1

We had dinner at Maggiano's Little Italy (chosen for it's Rat-Pack-Old-School-Vegas ambience) and walked over to the Venetian (my very, most favoritest place on Las Vegas Blvd.) because we were meeting Eric there for a late show to see....
Adam & me 2

Wayne Brady. Painfully funny Improv comedy, which you know we soooo love. We were still laughing at 1 am when we decided to order room service back in our fabulously ritzy hotel room. (Thanks again, Eric's client! =D)
Adam & Eric
Of course, you know we spent Saturday afternoon with the Arnaz's.  (Hi Desi *sigh* & Amy!)

Afterwards, I took him Downtown to the old-school casinos and we played Keno while having lunch at The Golden Nugget. Classic.
Adam & me 3

One of us took a break to soak in the fabulously ritzy tub while watching tv at our hotel while the other of us wandered up and down the strip for a few hours.  (Can you guess who did what? =D)

We met up later on at the beautiful Palazzo Hotel...
Adam & me 5

Where we saw The Jersey Boys.  So much fun!
Adam & me 4

Obviously, we had a wonderful time.

So... I would say that in Adam's case, judging by all the fun stuff we got to do and all the fun we had, that his SAPO-ness is the lucky kind. (phew!)

And I won't tell you specifically how he did with his first time gambling, but here he is comparing the wax figure of Ben Franklin at Madame Tussaud's to his newly aquired Ben Franklin Presidential Flash Cards.   ;-)

Adam & Ben Franklin

I'm a fool. *sigh*

I know it's been a while since I've written anything, but I trust my first-born kept you entertained while I was gone. (thanks, Amy Kikita!)

I have so much to tell you that I don't know where to start....

Okay, so my husband Eric had to go to Las Vegas to work.  And because I can be opportunistic sometimes (=D) I invited myself along.  Since Adam didn't have to work, I invited him along to keep me company.

So, I mentioned this to my online/blog friend, Amy Arnaz, and she invited us to come visit her and Desi in Boulder City (not far from Vegas).  Yes, I realize the story is taking a kind of surreal turn here, but that's not important right now....

Which is how Adam and I found ourselves in Boulder City, Nevada at the Historic Boulder Theatre watching Miss Amy and her ballerinas rehearse for their upcoming performance of The Nutcracker.

Boulder city ballet

We were already delighted by the quaintness of the town and the theater, not to mention getting to watch a sneak peek of The Nutcracker Ballet, when we spot one of the tech guys adjusting the lights on-stage.

"Adam, that's Desi!"

"No, Mom. That's a tech guy."

That was no ordinary tech guy.

I was right. It was my beloved Desi.  Desi Arnaz, Jr.

Amy brought him right over and introduced us. (be still my heart. *sigh*)

And okay, for like about 30 seconds I was a bit nervous, but then... we started talking....

Can I just tell you how funny, and smart and well-read this man is?  I kept forgetting he was the son of Lucy and Desi - okay, well, of course, I didn't forget forget.  It's just that I was so enjoying sharing stories with my new friend, Desi.

Desi and me

We talked and talked and talked.  About how he and Amy met and how they ended up in Boulder City.  About how his parents met.  About life in their small town.

We talked about his paternal grandfather, whom I knew was kind of a legendary political figure in Cuba.  I remember my parents always telling the story that the elder Desiderio was the mayor of Santiago de Cuba, but that his intention was not to actually run for mayor, but he was so popular that he won as the write-in candidate. Isn't that awesome?

He told me about how his dad left Cuba and kind of accidentally ended up in show business.  I told him my own "how I left Cuba" story.  We talked about Cuba now and about going back there someday. He told me about the time he met Arturo Sandoval and yes, Andy Garcia!!!  (He brought it up. Surreal. Shut up. I know.)

Desi has a wonderful sense of humor and again, I almost forgot about who his parents were since we were talking about so many different subjects (okay, yes, I know they are probably the most famous TV icons EVER, but I got distracted, okay?) until....

He did a dead-on, wild-eyed impression of his dad with that distinctive accent.  Shut. Up.  It was crazy-awesome!

Just when I thought it just couldn't get any more surreal, his friend, Billy, stopped by.....

Mr. Billy Hinsche.  Of Dino, Desi and Billy fame, of course,  and who later played with the Beach Boys!! (who I went to see as often as they played in L.A. all through the 70's, but that's not important right now).

Billy and me

If I had taken the time to fantasize about how my encounter with Desi might have panned out, I don't think I would have been clever enough to add "and then Billy drops by for a visit."  Again, another treat!

Picture me as a young tween seeing these adorable faces of Dino, Desi, and Billy for the first time singing their hit, "I'm a Fool" (I actually even owned this record and wore down the grooves from being over-played - I was TEN, okay??):

Aren't they just FREAKING ADORABLE???  Do you see what I'm talking about here?

Okay. Sorry. I know I'm babbling a little.  I was just so surprised and delighted to meet these guys and to find they were so.... accessible and well....just plain nice.  I had a total personal-time-warp moment when I realized if called upon I could totally sing "I'm a Fool" from memory, but that's not important right now, either.

They have since re-grouped (and un-grouped) as Ricci, Desi, and Billy.

After many hugs and kisses(!) and lovely parting gifts (an autographed live cd - YAY! and chocolate. =D) we had to say goodbye.

Parting gifts

I was genuinely sad to go.  I felt like I was leaving old friends "de vida" - you know?

Thank you to the lovely Miss Amy, for the invitation.

Miss Amy and me

And thanks to Desi and Billy for making my visit so wonderful and memorable.
You guys are awesome!

I like to call this photo: Marta, Desi, and Billy.  That has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? ;-)

Desi, Billy, and Marta

I spent the rest of the afternoon replaying our visit and conversation (while Adam and I wandered about Las Vegas) and thinking once again that I really do lead a charmed life and then just look who I ran into at Madame Tussaud's:

Lucy & me

That's right. Desi's mom.  ;-)

Cuban guys can COOK

My friend, Val (from Babalú blog) sent me the following story:

"Henry was at my house on Sunday for the Dolphins game and mentioned that he’s on a list serv for his graduating class at Belen. Basically, it’s a net  service where men from that class post links and communicate with each other.  Someone had mentioned on the list serv about Cuban food and missing pastelitos de guayaba as he lives up north somewhere where there’s no Cuban food and Henry posted your pastelito recipe to the list serv.

He says that a bunch of those guys – mind you, Cuban, professional men that have no idea what a kitchen is actually for – actually made the pastelitos and not only loved them, but found themselves talking about and trading “pastelito baking tips” on the list serv.

It's all your fault they're all acting kinda gay."

Then, Henry (also from Babalú blog) sent me the actual thread:

Here's your quick and easy pastelito recipe courtesy of Marta Darby of Babalu Blog:

Thanks for the recipe - it looks totally do-able ( and I can get the Ancel Guayaba here...)  It is clearly a Cuban cook, with the manicure and the bracelets while she cooks.....

Marta Darby is one of the sweetest people in the world.  She lives in California and thus she's had to become an expert in Cuban cooking just to be able to eat.

Awesome recipe (I had to try it out).

Boy, the tone of this list has taken a post-election turn.
Now we're exchanging recipes....
R

OMG!  Isn't that AWESOME???  I just about wept because I was laughing so hard picturing the Cuban men exchanging "pastelito baking tips."  And I especially LOVE that one of them included pictures of his final product!

(BTW, my pastelito recipe can be found here.)

But there's more... from Amy Arnaz upon receiving my cookbook:

"Desi saw it just now and loves it! Tomorrow I'll take the picture and send it to you.  There are a few recipes in there that his Dad always made and we never really knew how to make them."

(NOTE: emphasis mine. BTW, Mrs. Arnaz, who is a lovely ballerina, has a blog called Insights from the Magic Tutu. Go visit her and tell her Marta from MBFCF sent you.)

To me, those were the very BEST compliments I could receive.  I often say that I'm not a "foodie" or anything, I'm just Cuban and I cook.  My goal is to make easy, delicious, Cuban-tasting food.

If I can get people (that is, Cuban professional men!) to connect to their Cuban roots by way of their stomach I feel like I've done a good job.  That Desi Arnaz, Jr. is able to connect with memories of his Dad in this way "puts the lid on the jar" for me.

Which is why I'm framing this picture and putting it in my kitchen:

Desi Arnaz & MBFCF
Desi Arnaz Jr. (*sigh*) enjoys MBFCF Cookbook.

Well, okay, that... and because he's still so dang ADORABLE!    (Hi Desi! Besitos!!)

I'm making baby-back ribs today using the pimentón I just received.
Get yourselves over to Babalú blog for some Costillitas de Martica.

And be sure to tell any Cuban guys you know that I have a cookbook. ;-)

Now.... can anyone tell me how to get a hold of Andy Garcia??? (hint, hint)  =D

People are talking...

You know I sent out a few of my cookbooks earlier this month - to the MBFCF 2-Year Blogiversary Winners and of course, to my darling Desi Arnaz, Jr. (sigh).

This is what the recipients had to say about My Big, Fat, Cuban Family Cookbook:

MBFCF

Hi Marta,

The cookbook arrived this morning! I am so excited! It is gorgeous. I love all the photos and the family stories. You have such a lovely family. I can't wait to try some of the recipes.

Abrazos,
Annette

Wow! Great job on the book Marta! It is AMAZING, I'm not kidding you. The stories that segue into the recipes...the recipes themselves...some oldies but goodies and some I never woulda thought of like the guayaba and cream cheese torrejas??? What kind of genius came up with THAT one?? By the way, the day I received the book, I was boiling a can of condensed milk to make dulce de leche and I fell asleep and about an hour an a half later...BOOM! Racka, racka, racka, hissssss, hissssss.....(Mind you I thought my daughter had gotten home in a bad mood and kept sleeping) and then the horrific smell of smoke and burnt dulce de leche...ayayay...anyway, a few hours of cleaning later I sit down to read your book and there is another genius idea of CROCKPOTTING your condensed milk...nope, not me, I go the "blow up the house" route instead. Anyway, thank you so much for taking me down memory, early exilio lane and for picking me to win your book. Believe it or not, I was hoping for the apron, but this is SO much better...thanks Marta, your da bomb!

By the way, any ideas on how to get dulce de leche off of my popcorn ceiling:/ ?

Sometimes I wonder how I get myself into these situations...

I do a lot of stuff.

I'm not saying that in a bragging way.  It's just the nature of the way my life is structured.  And I'm grateful that I have the time (and the fabulous  husband who indulges me) to do all the things I do.

Usually you'll find me here at home in my Suburban Cuban-American Bubble, cooking Cuban food and writing about it, or pining away over Andy Garcia (=D), or most recently, confessing my never-ending love and devotion to Desi Arnaz Jr. (sigh)

I can be found homeschooling my kids or driving them around to various events.  Or doing creative stuff

But tonight, I will be stepping out of my comfort zone just a bit.

I'll be co-hosting the Babalú Radio Hour with George "Pitbull" Moneo and Reinier "El Gusano" Potts this evening.

Both of them are absolutely brilliant and I confess that I'm intimidated by the thought of being on the show with these "wise guys."  ;-)

Babaluradioaj8

While they're explaining the nuances of the economic bailout and the distinctions between Obama and McCain(and dropping the occasional f-bomb, but that's not important right now), I'll be the one stuttering in the background....

"Ummm.....yeah! What he said! Hey, is anybody hungry??"

Speaking of Cuban heart-throbs...

Before there was Andy.... (insert heart flutter here)
Andy-Garcia_040

There was Desi... (sigh)

Desidrumcolor1

That's right.  Desi Arnaz Jr.  (be still my foolish heart...)

Proud and handsome descendant of Cuban Royalty, Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball (let's have a moment of reverent silence here - thank you).

MY Desi. (heavy sigh) My First True Love. (in my 12 year-old mind, we were MFEO. "made for each other." =D)

THE Desi of my elaborate he's-Cuban-and-I'm-Cuban adolescent daydreams.  The would-be recipient of my Dear Desi letters (that I wrote only in the absolute privacy of my very personal pink-with-a-lock-on-it-we-all-had-one Diary, but that's not important right now).

Ah, Desi.... (heavy sigh.)

So imagine my surprise and delight when I received the following comment on one of my posts...

...............................................................................................................................................

Love, love, love your Big Fat Cuban Family blog. Found it by accident and can't wait to show it to Desi.
Muchas gracias!

WHO??  And did she really say, "...can't wait to show it to Desi." ???

THE Desi?
MY Desi???

Feeling emboldened, I decided to send him a token of my unfailing love and devotion...

MBFCF cookbook for Desi Arnaz Jr.

Sorry, Andy.  It had to be done.

DISCLAIMER:  Just to let you know that I'm not as stalkery as all this sounds, I've exchanged emails with the lovely Mrs. Arnaz and she responded with the following:

"Yes, Marta, please blog me and also send the cookbook!  And autograph it
with kisses to Desi.
He'll love that!  He has taught me how to make alot of
Cuban dishes that he remembers from his father."

Emphasis is mine. And I am nothing if not obedient. ;-)

SHUT. UP!   =D

***ADDENDUM 10/7/08:

For the record, the Little Ricky seen on I Love Lucy is not the same person as Desi Arnaz Jr., although he is an incredible drummer in his own right - There is however, an amazing corrolation in their lives. Read that unbelievable story here.
