What goes around...
/I want a new phone.
It’s totally a pie-in-the-sky daydream at this point. I have a perfectly capable and lovely Verizon LG that does everything I want it to do. It's just that I saw a brand new one that looks better. *sigh*
So, while I was driving around feeling sorry for my poor over-privileged, super-entitled self, (I know. Shut up.) I heard an ad from the Verizon Wireless people that they were having a buy-one-get-one-free deal. And yes, every now and then I hear an ad and think, "Hey! I should get that new gadget that would make me think I'm almost cool." (I am usually very sensible about frivolous consumer goods, but I'm a little stressed out and vulnerable right now. Don't judge me.)
We are leaving in two days for Washington D.C. and New York City. I thought how sweet would it be to have a new phone for the trip? (seeing as I’m a Mobile Blogger now and all… =D)
So began the manipulative machinations….
I said to Eric: “Honey, you really need a new phone before we go on our trip.” Did you see how I spun it around just there? What a sneak! (Actually, this part was true. He has been using a basic phone that barely does more than text, and he’s an internet marketing guy who should be better connected. I’m just saying.)
And so I made my case stronger.
“You’re not going to want to haul the laptop across the country. You should really get a phone that does more so you can get and answer emails and all that.”
(I had him there. =D)
So he agreed to get the new phone. Yay! I was secretly celebrating my new touch-screen with the QWERTY keyboard. (I sooo love my QWERTY keyboard that I already have. And if you can’t have an iPhone, well, a QWERTY keyboard is the next best thing. It just helps so much when you’re a Mobile Blogger... like me. =D)
Oooh! All my sneaky plans were about to come to fruition (*she rubs her hands together in the universal sign of buahahaha sneakiness*).
"The new phone is practically mine!" (Of course, I didn't say it out loud. If I'm going to be this shallow the only decent thing to do is pretend to not care.) =D
But over the weekend when we were actually out in the world, Eric forgot his phone, so we couldn’t do the upgrade. =(
So we left it until Monday.
Which was fine. Except that yesterday, Adam broke his phone when he dove onto the deck of a yacht in Newport Harbor to save it from crashing, but that's not important right now. (If he decides he wants to hijack my blog and tell this story I will certainly let him, but until then all you need to know is that Adam broke his phone and needed a new one.)
So today, we head over to the local Verizon store and this is what happened:
1) Eric got a brand new LG Voyager in Titanium touch-screen-with-QWERTY-keyboard phone. He’s totally happy.
2)Adam got the “get-one-free” brand-new LG Voyager in Titanium touch-screen-with-QWERTY-keyboard phone (which is the one that should have been mine, she said bitterly).
3) Jonathan got Eric’s old phone, which is perfect for a 13 year old who just needs to stay in touch with his parents when he’s out in the world. And he wasn’t scheduled to get one until his 14th birthday in December, so he’s over-the-moon.
And me?
I’m brewing in my own bitter stew… No new phone for me. =(
Okay, I admit to being manipulative and Machiavellian and yes, I totally get that I’m just being a big shallow whiner-baby.
As John Lennon so aptly put it:
“Instant karma’s gonna get you.”
