Baby Steps. Saving for College - If You Start It, They'll Match It

I have been a grandmother for 21 whole months now. I"m practically a pro! And even though my little Squish is across the country, we manage to Skype with him every week. It makes me sad that Eric and I don't get to see him day in and day out, but we have managed to maintain a relationship with him made easier by technology.

We exchange photos and video via our iPhones. He recognizes our voices and our faces.

It's a brave new world this whole cyber-grandmothering gig (Call me "Wella"). Asher is now a year-and-a-half and he's 2,680 miles away in Alexandria, Virginia.

But he was here a few weeks ago and he spent the night with us. People, it was so amazing to me. He played with us all day and sat at the table with us and ate and played and napped and happily stayed with us overnight without whining or complaining.

Baby steps. That's why it was so lovely. We show up week after week and talk to him through our computer screen. And we play peek-a-boo. And we laugh together. And he knows us now.

There's an object lesson in all this. If you put in the time now, it will pay off dividends later. As with any good investment, the only wrong way to do it is not to begin.

This Squish is already growing so quickly, it will be no time before he's 17 and applying for colleges. (As the grandparent, my perspective on how quickly the time goes is crystal clear.)

And because hindsight is indeed 20-20, and I know how time flies when you're having fun, I feel compelled to tell you about this awesome program called ScholarShare 529 to help you get started saving for college for your child or better yet, for your own grandchild.

For one day, on May 25th, if you open a ScholarShare 529 College Savings Account with $50 and sign up for ongoing automatic contributions of $25 or more per month, ScholarShare will match the $50.  <--Did you catch that? If you start it, they'll match it!

Seriously. Isn't that an amazing deal? Click on this link for more information on the ScholarShare 529 Plan. Trust me, you're going to want to do this for the next generation.

I don't know if Asher will attend college one day. What I do know is this: If he does decide to go, we want to help him get there. This ScholarShare 529 is so cool and they're being so crazy-generous on May 25th, that it would be crazy for us not to take them up on their offer.

It seems like talking about college is a far-fetched goal for someone who's not quite 2, but if I've learned anything from being a Cyber-Wella (<--I may have to trademark that, but that's not important right now), it is that Baby Steps are the perfect way to reach our goals.

My grandson knows me because I've invested in this relationship, however clumsily, I've at least been consistent. At this rate, and with the help of ScholarShare, Asher will get to college someday. Baby steps.

Also, call me "Wella."
